We are told in this psalm that God created each one of us in our mother’s womb. That he knew us from the moment of conception and that our path was already mapped out. Our Catholic community recognises that each child is a unique gift from God. For those children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities the Church teaches that we have a special responsibility and should always try to respond in the most appropriate way. All children with SEND and their families should be supported from as early as possible within the Catholic Community. At St Ignatius’ Catholic Primary School we welcome children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND). We provide opportunities and resources in a caring and professional environment to meet individual children’s needs.

In light of the above, we intend:

  • To undertake a whole school approach to SEND where there is close liaison between head teacher, SENCo and staff within an environment which fosters a close partnership with parents/carers.
  • To identify children with SEND as early as possible in order that appropriate action may be taken to meet the child’s needs. We are committed to early identification and intervention.
  • To provide suitable differentiated work and resources to enable all children to access the curriculum at their own level.
  • To meet the academic, social, moral and spiritual needs of all pupils to enable them to reach their full potential, in an inclusive environment and taking into account the needs of all children.
  • To take into account the wishes of the child in the light of their age and understanding.


Admission Arrangements

Admissions to the school are the responsibility of the governors and details are set out in the School Admissions Policy. The admission of pupils with a statement of Special Educational Needs falls outside the school’s normal admission procedures. Details of such admissions are set out in the Special Educational Needs Code of Practice. The school will admit children with statements of Special Educational Needs in which St. Ignatius Catholic Primary School is named on the statement. Where a child has such a statement naming the school, a consultation will take place to ensure the school is able to meet the child’s needs in an appropriate way.

How does St. Ignatius’ Catholic Primary School know if children need extra help and what should I do if I think my child may have special educational needs?

  • We know when pupils need help if:
    concerns are raised by parents/carers, teachers or the child
  • limited progress is being made
  • there is a change in the pupil’s behaviour or progress

The class teacher is the initial point of contact for responding to parental concerns. If you have further concerns then contact Mrs Ridgeon who is the school SENCo.

How will St. Ignatius’ Catholic Primary School support my child?

  • Each pupil’s education programme will be planned by the class teacher. It will be
    differentiated accordingly to suit the pupil’s individual needs. This may include additional general support by the teacher or teaching assistant in class.
  • If a pupil has needs related to more specific areas of their education, such as spelling,
    handwriting, mathematics or literacy skills etc. then the pupil will be placed in a small focus group. This will be run by the teacher or a teaching assistant. The duration of the
    intervention will vary but will usually be for at least 8 weeks. The interventions will be
    regularly reviewed by all involved to ascertain the effectiveness of the provision and to
    inform future planning. These interventions will be recorded on the class provision map which is a record of the interventions, timings and cost. If you have any queries related to the interventions please do not hesitate to contact the class teacher or Mrs Ridgeon.
  • Pupil progress meetings are held each term. This is a meeting where the class teacher
    meets with the Senior Leadership Team to discuss the progress of the pupils in their class. This shared discussion may highlight any potential problems in order for further support to be planned.
  • Occasionally a pupil may need more expert support from an outside agency such as the
    Learning Support Service, Educational Psychology Service, Speech and Language
    Therapy Team, Communication Interaction and Access Team, Occupational Therapist etc. A referral will be made, with your consent, and forwarded to the most appropriate agency. After a series of assessments, a programme of support is usually provided to the school
    and parents/carers.

How will the curriculum be matched to my child’s needs?

  • Work will be differentiated by the class teacher to enable the child to access the curriculum at their own level.
  • Focused work led by the class teacher or a teaching assistant may be planned.
  • If a child has been identified as having a special need, a Learner Profile and, possibly, a
    Supporting Me To Learn Plan with be written in conjunction with the child and parents.
  • Targets will be set according to the child’s area of need. These will be monitored by the
    class teacher on a regular basis and by the SENCo three times per year. Supporting Me To Learn Plans will be discussed and shared with parents at Parents’ Evenings.
  • If appropriate specialist equipment may be provided for the pupil e.g. writing slopes,
    pen/pencils grips or easy to use scissors.

How will I know how my child is doing and how will you help me to support my child’s learning?

  • You will be able to discuss your child’s progress at Parents’ Evenings.
  • Your child’s class teacher will be available at the end of the school day if you wish to raise a concern. Appointments can be made to speak to the class teacher or SENCo by visiting the school office.
  • The class teacher may suggest ways of how you can support your child.
  • If outside agencies or the Educational Psychologist have been involved suggestions and
    programmes of study are normally provided that can be used at home.

How are the school’s resources allocated and matched to children’s special educational needs?

The SEN budget is allocated each financial year. The money is used to provide additional
support or resources dependant on an individual’s needs. The additional provision may be allocated after discussion with the class teacher at pupil progress meetings or if a concern has been raised by them at another time during the year. Resources may include deployment of staff depending on individual circumstances.

How will St. Ignatius Catholic Primary School support my child in making transitions to new schools?

Many strategies are in place to enable each pupil’s transition to be as smooth as possible. These include:

  • Discussions between the previous or receiving schools prior to the pupil joining/leaving.
  • All pupils attend a Transition Session where they spend some time with their new class
  • Additional visits are arranged for pupils who need extra time to ease their transition to a new school.
  • Mrs Ridgeon is always happy to meet parents/carers prior to their child joining school.
  • Secondary school staff visit pupils prior to them joining their new school and many offer extra transition sessions for pupils with additional needs.
  • Mrs Ridgeon liaises with the SENCos from the secondary schools to pass on information regarding SEND pupils.
  • Where a pupil may have more specialised needs, a separate meeting may be arranged with Mrs Ridgeon, the secondary school SENCo, the parents/carers and, where appropriate, the child. This may take place during the Annual Review for pupils with statements and may involve Person Centred Planning.

How is the decision made about what type and how much support my child will receive?

These decisions are made in consultation with class teachers and the Senior Leadership
Team. Decisions are based upon termly tracking of pupil progress and as a result of
assessments by outside agencies. During their school life, if further concerns are identified due to the pupil’s lack of progress or well-being then other interventions will be arranged.
