Spelling at St. Ignatius

At St. Ignatius Catholic Primary School, we prioritise a strong foundation in phonics to support reading and spelling development. We have adopted the renowned “Floppy’s Phonics” program for Nursery, EYFS and Key Stage One, ensuring consistency and effectiveness across these crucial early years. Please refer to our ‘Early Reading & Phonics‘ page for more information.

Key Stage One

Upon successful completion of the phonics screening in Year 1 (or Year 2 if they are to retake their screening check), students progress to address any remaining knowledge gaps in Stage 1 and Stage 2 throughout the year. As part of their preparation for the End of Key Stage One SATs, they also engage in some SATs style practise using Spelling Shed resources and past papers to become familiar with the format and requirements.

Key Stage Two

In Key Stage Two, our teachers follow the Spelling Shed Medium Term Plans tailored to each year group (or mixed-aged planning for mixed classes). This comprehensive resource ensures a structured and progressive approach to spelling instruction.

Spelling Shed Overview

Medium Term Plans and Word Lists

Spelling Shed’s approach to spelling involves the relationship between sounds and written symbols as well as using morphology to help spell through meaning and is backed by the latest research. The carefully selected word lists and engaging activities provide opportunities to incorporate phonics and meaning to strengthen spelling skills and build vocabulary acquisition.

Based on phonics, morphology and etymology, Spelling Shed allows teachers to deliver accurate yet engaging spelling lessons, which are then be followed up with additional activities that can be carried out immediately or revisited later to consolidate the learning.

Using Spelling Shed at Home & In School

The platform can also be used by children both in school and at home (just ask your teacher for your log in information!). We encourage the use of the platform to practise weekly spellings as they will be set work on here by their class teacher! Children often love using the platform as it offers many fun and engaging game features which really encourage them to learn.

The image below shows the variety of spelling games children can access on the platform.

At St. Ignatius we also hold termly ‘Spelling Competitions’ which really enthuse pupils to battle other classes and become the best spellers they can be!

Our phonics and spelling curriculum reflects our commitment to nurturing strong literacy skills in our students, empowering them to become confident and proficient readers and writers. By combining effective programs, assessments, and targeted support, we strive to create a cohesive learning journey that enables our students to flourish academically and excel in their language abilities.
